Fostering Resilience and Empowerment in Refugee Camps
Transforming Lives Through Yoga: Our Journey
For 9 years, our yoga initiative at the Dzaleka refugee camp has been a beacon of hope, empowering thousands of children and hundreds of adults. Amidst challenging circumstances, we promote resilience, dignity, and well-being. Join us in illuminating lives and building brighter futures in this complex reality.
Identifying and Training Refugee Yoga Instructors
In 2017, a Yoga Pura Vida volunteer introduced yoga to the Dzaleka refugee camp, identifying passionate individuals for instructor training. By 2018, the first group of refugees completed their training, becoming yoga instructors and catalysts for community transformation.
Expanding Yoga Across Dzaleka Refugee Camp
With the first instructors trained, yoga began reaching children across the Dzaleka refugee camp. Classes in schools and community spaces introduced well-being, focus, and joy to young minds, expanding yoga’s positive impact throughout the camp.
How Yoga Transforms Communities in Refugee Camps
The project’s growth has fortified community resilience, offering tools for stress management, enhancing physical and emotional health, and instilling hope amidst adversity. Yoga fosters unity and empowers refugees to navigate their challenges collectively.
Nurturing Refugee Youth Through Yoga
Yoga serves as a foundation for refugee children and youth at Dzaleka, creating safe spaces for emotional expression, self-confidence building, and developing resilience to overcome adversity.
Global Recognition: Expanding Yoga in Refugee Camps
In 2023 and 2024, support from the Mind and Life Institute, enabled us to train 11 new refugee yoga instructors. This milestone expanded yoga’s reach, enhancing physical and mental well-being for refugees and fostering resilience in difficult circumstances.
Every yoga session in Dzaleka is a step toward healing and self-sufficiency, helping to build a brighter, more dignified future for those who have lost everything.
